About 3YO

We believe that it’s always useful to understand something about the people you work with - who they are, where they’ve come from, what they believe in and most importantly what inspires them. Our approach is simple yet powerful, intense yet energising and most of all freeing.

We challenge owners, leaders and teams to discover new levels of awareness. So they can achieve clarity of purpose, direction and strategy. Find the commitment necessary to see a vision come to life. And take inspired action that delivers impact, momentum and ultimately results.

The philosophies and business principles that make up the core of the '3 Years Out' work have been gathered and refined by Kevin Dawkins from his 30+ years as a business owner, entrepreneur, coach and facilitator and having worked alongside literally hundreds of fellow business owners.

Our process is intensive, our work is inspired, fun and rewarding and we believe that your work should be too!

The 3YO Philosophy is alive today because:

  1. we've come from the old and have embraced the new
  2. we apply world class business thinking
  3. we're entrepreneurs too (in fact we fill the role of ‘entrepreneur in residence’ for many of our clients)
  4. we have a unique partnering model that creates and shares value (and even risk)
  5. we believe that when you transform the owner (person) you transform the business
  6. we are actively engaged with many other highly successful businesses and leaders - which makes us, and you relevant
  7. we understand that in any organisation it is the people who really make the difference
  8. we live by the creed, “for real – or not at all” (“don’t give me no philosophy that don’t grow me no corn" – Sun Bear)
  9. we operate with integrity, honesty, high energy and deep commitment for the client

We like to think of ourselves as being...

  • Dynamic, high energy, inspiring
  • Colourful, friendly, passionate
  • Open, smart, fast, doers (not talkers)
  • Knowledgeable, experienced, relevant business people
  • Connected, leveraged, effective, leaders (not followers)
  • Internationally experienced, strategic thinkers across diverse sectors and disciplines
  • Relationship builders and deal-makers

The meaning of Orange

Orange combines the energy of red and the happiness of yellow. It is associated with joy, sunshine, and the tropics. Orange represents enthusiasm, fascination, happiness, creativity, determination, attraction, success, encouragement, and stimulation.

To the human eye, orange is a very hot color, so it gives the sensation of heat. Nevertheless, orange is not as aggressive as red. Orange increases oxygen supply to the brain, produces an invigorating effect, and stimulates mental activity.

It is highly accepted among young people. As a citrus color, orange is associated with healthy food and stimulates appetite. Orange is the color of fall and harvest. In heraldry, orange is symbolic of strength and endurance.

Orange has very high visibility, so you can use it to catch attention and raise awareness. The meaning of orange is illumination, wisdom, and wealth and is often used to symbolise high quality.

Who We Are

We are a talented team of New Zealand based entrepreneurs who leverage our unique abilities to create trusted relationships, share connections, listen for growth opportunities, build smart plans, inspire action and create outcomes toward a greater future.

We are committed to lifetime learning and bring a wealth of experience across sectors, disciplines and business models.  We work and live by the same principles we teach and share with others, and therefore come from a place of personal experience, integrity and relevance.

Entrepreneurial companies are our forté

We’ve founded and owned significant shareholdings in a number of businesses and worked with hundreds of others including international ones. We only work with businesses that have great potential for growth and transformation and with leaders who have the ambition and courage to see that potential realised.

Our clients are already
inherently ‘successful’ – it is just that we help them go much further and faster.

Lee Short Owner/Director

Hydraulink Fluid Connectors

I have known Kevin since 1998 when he first presented at our company conference. We have kept in contact over the years until in 2009 we invited Kevin to work with the owners and Board on a revitalisation plan for Hydraulink. Having grown to market leadership in New Zealand and growing quickly in Australia, we needed to refocus our strategy both nationally and internationally. The results have been outstanding with double-digit growth in New Zealand and Australia, and a renewed sense of purpose and direction throughout all levels of the business. So much so, that we are now looking at opportunities for international expansion.

We Believe

Our world is changing faster every day

It is becoming more connected, networked, leveraged, customised, social, personalised and instant.  There are greater choices, competition (direct and indirect), stimulation, noise and more possibilities than ever before.  Getting customer attention is harder and servicing their needs more complex.  Brands are becoming more powerful; the brand landscape more complex and customer churn can happen in a heartbeat.

Some companies are becoming successful faster than ever, in some cases creating overnight millionaires. Predictably, those that aren’t embracing the changing nature of business are becoming irrelevant at an alarming rate.  We love the philosophy of former GE CEO Jack Welch; "when the rate of change outside your business is faster than the rate of change inside your business - then you have a problem"

The world is almost borderless.  Capital, competition, customers, suppliers, innovation, production, marketing, strategic partners, resourcing and consumers can come from anywhere, at any time and in many forms.

Business was once dominated by the big and the resource rich, but the influence is shifting to the fast and the nimble. The control of people, products, agencies and distribution no longer guarantees a premium or a profit and networks are the new nett worth.

Two things are undeniably true: Change is inevitable.  But growth is intentional.

And that leads to a critical question that every business owner should ask of themselves and their business. "How do we intend responding to our rapidly changing world and business environment?"

The way we see it there are only two choices (well, just one really). You can become a victim of change and risk becoming obsolete or increasingly irrelevant in the future world of business.  Or you can use this unique moment in time as a powerful motivator and catalyst to innovate, invigorate and transform your business.

Where could your business be 3 Years Out from today?

What we do

3 Years Out is here to inspire and challenge ambitious business owners and entrepreneurs to achieve greater reward and meaning. We help transform businesses and lives through a unique Business Development process, based on the 4 key disciplines of Awareness, Clarity, Commitment  and Action.

3YO's unique partnering model gives you all the power of a virtual senior team – skills, networks, vision, experience, energy – without the significant near term capital and cash flow burden this would normally bring.

We can achieve this because:

  1. Our unique partnering model is designed specifically to suit entrepreneurial growth companies.
  2. We are entrepreneurs too. We understand growing early stage leveraged businesses. Our aim is to increase short term cash flow, reduce capital requirement, maximise brand and leverage, and live by the values of your business.

Having responsible, senior 'partners' committed to the growth of your business has the following benefits:

  • It liberates your time to grow the vision and identify new opportunities
  • It helps to ensure that ambitious, often well funded competition don’t catch up with you (worse still overtake you)
  • It means you are plugged in to a process of continuous growth, learning and performance improvement for you, your team and business
  • It means that you finally have the resource you always wanted to act on the growth potential in your business
  • It means you'll experience manifesting bigger outcomes - and faster
  • It means you'll avoid one of the biggest traps affecting many of our business owners and
entrepreneurs - 'the loneliness of leadership'.

DJ Business Owner

There have been a few people who have made a big difference to the path of my business and my life. Some have supported me in the tough moments, some have helped me ‘lighten up’, some have helped me do what I would have preferred not to do, others have encouraged me to “just do it” with vigor and some have helped me to understand. Kevin has been all of these people to me on numerous occasions, and for that, I am especially grateful to him.

Our process

For decades, the organisations that have achieved the greatest reward and meaning are those that:

  1. Operate from a place of heightened Awareness
  2. Have absolute Clarity of purpose and direction
  3. Demonstrate a deep Commitment to implementing strategy
  4. Take massive and consistent Action on the things that count

Awareness

Having enough awareness to see the 'REAL' picture

Experience tells us that business repeats itself mindlessly unless we become mindful. We are at our most powerful and effective  as entrepreneurs and business owners when we operate from a heightened state of awareness. True insight is only possible through awareness - of ourselves, our business, markets, customers and team.

Clarity

Clarity of purpose and direction

Clarity of purpose, direction and strategy is the major differentiator between those who achieve and those who stagnate. Clarity unleashes an energy of itself – of confidence, certainty, focus and possibility.

Commitment

Commitment to people, plans, and the things that matter

Commitment is about doing the work to align with a vision, values, direction and plan. And then trusting in the process of business development and transformation that always leads to a breakthrough. Commitment is about trusting that process.

Action

Action that delivers intended results

Inspired action is about channeling all of the resources of the business in the right direction to create impact, momentum and ultimately results. Where the attention goes, the energy flows and the results flow.

Graeme Hogan

Business Wingman

With 20 + years of General Manager/CEO hands on, practical work-time that focuses on improving the effectiveness of businesses – I offer support to grow businesses to become what they want to be in a sustainable way.

If you are:
  • Imagining your business taking the next step in its growth and development but finding the time to create this challenging;
  • Challenged in realising that forced or planned change you need or want is too slow and meeting too much internal resistance; or
  • Feeling things are getting ‘ragged at the edges’ as you Imagine, create and realise the growth potential in your business.
  • These symptoms are often a reflection of a business under stress, lacking the structure, process and strategic intent to move through to the next level. And that is where I can add the greatest value.
  • Through clarity of the next steps for your business, improving the structures, processes and focusing on that strategic competitive advantage of their current business I work with you, as business owners (and importantly your team), to engage all in delivering whatever this next step is. The end result is an effective business development process that supports and develops you and your team to move through to that next level of performance.
