| About 3YearsOut | What we do | Principals | About 3YearsOut
We believe that it’s always useful to understand something about the people you work with - who they are, where they’ve come from, what they believe in and most importantly what inspires them.
The philosophies and business principles that make up the core of the 3YO work have been gathered and refined by Rob Rogers and Kevin Dawkins from their 30-plus years as business owners and entrepreneurs, and having worked alongside literally hundreds of fellow business leaders.
The 3YearsOut philosophy is alive today because we:
- Came from the old
- Have embraced the new
- Apply world class business thinking
- Are entrepreneurs too
- Have a unique partnering model that creates value
We are passionate about working with ambitious, dynamic fellow entrepreneurs and leaders of midsized companies who have a strong desire to transform and be in a very different place ‘3 Years Out’ from today.
We are a talented team of New Zealand entrepreneurs who leverage our unique abilities to create trusted relationships, share connections, listen for growth opportunities, build smart plans, inspire action and create outcomes toward a greater future.
Our process is intensive and we are highly selective about who we work with. Our work is inspired, fun and rewarding.
Who we are
We are committed to lifetime learning and bring a wealth of experience across sectors, disciplines and business models. We work and live by our own principles and therefore come from a place of personal experience, integrity and relevance.
We like to think of ourselves as being:
- dynamic, high energy, inspiring,
- colourful, friendly, passionate,
- open, smart, fast, doers (not talkers)
- knowledgeable, experienced, relevent business people
- connected, leveraged, effective, leaders (not followers)
- Internationally experienced, stategic thinkers across diverse sectors and disciplines
- relationship builders and deal makers
The meaning of orange
Orange combines the energy of red and the happiness of yellow. It is associated with joy, sunshine, and the tropics. Orange represents enthusiasm, fascination, happiness, creativity, determination, attraction, success, encouragement, and stimulation. To the human eye, orange is a very hot color, so it gives the sensation of heat. Nevertheless, orange is not as aggressive as red. Orange increases oxygen supply to the brain, produces an invigorating effect, and stimulates mental activity. It is highly accepted among young people. As a citrus color, orange is associated with healthy food and stimulates appetite. Orange is the color of fall and harvest. In heraldry, orange is symbolic of strength and endurance.
Orange has very high visibility, so you can use it to catch attention and raise awareness. The meaning of orange is illumination, wisdom, and wealth and is often used to symbolise high quality.
Entrepreneurial companies are our forté
We’ve founded and owned significant shareholdings in a few - and worked with, and at senior level with hundreds of others - including global ones. We work only with businesses that have great potential for growth and transformation – and with leaders who have the ambition and courage to see that potential realised.
Our clients are already inherently ‘successful’ – it is just that we help them go much further and much faster.
What we do
Working through a unique partnering model we create levels of awareness, thinking and clarity that businesses rarely experience, and access channels and models that deliver exponential results
Having identified the strategic value in the current business model we develop, test and implement a range of strategies to leverage that potential in the rapidly shifting global marketplace.
- We identify what needs to be done, create the space to make this work, then create and help to execute the plan
- We help you to achieve leverage
- We access a wider talent team, including direct lines to some large international organisations and channels

What we do
Via 3YO’s unique partnering model we bring the power of a senior virtual team – skills, networks, vision, experience, energy – without the significant near term capital and cash flow burden this would normally bring.
We can achieve this because:
1. Our unique partnering model is designed specifically to suit entrepreneurial growth companies. This normally works via a discounted (from market rate) cash component complemented by a reward aspect, and is customised for each partnership.
2. We are entrepreneurs too. We understand growing early stage leveraged businesses. Our aim is to increase short term cash flow, reduce capital requirement, maximise brand & leverage, and live by the values of the company.
Having responsible, senior 'partners' commited to the growth of your business has the following benefits:
- It liberates the principals’ time to grow the vision and identify new opportunities
- It helps to ensure the large, well funded competition don’t catch up / overtake
- It means continuous improvement happens
e.g. optimised SEO, ‘website as a sales tool’ thinking, Web 2.0 etc => leading to far higher enquiry and easier sales
- It means that more senior business outcomes can be achieved
e.g. referral partners: sourcing, closing, training, feedback loops &
performance tracking
